Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are revolutionizing the healthcare industry. Yet long before machine learning became mainstream, Euroimmun was pioneering its use in immunofluorescence testing.

At a time when AI and machine learning were not yet widely embraced in healthcare, Euroimmun’s integration of these technologies into their EUROPattern system provided substantial value to clinical laboratories. By automating the analysis of complex immunofluorescence patterns through the EUROPattern Classifier, they effectively minimized human error, increased efficiency, and accelerated the diagnostic process. This gave early adopters a competitive edge, enabling faster and more reliable diagnostic workflows. With the use of high-resolution cameras, automated laser-focus systems, and other innovative imaging techniques, Euroimmun was able to capture vast amounts of data that were ideal for training their machine learning models. This synergy between cutting-edge hardware and AI-driven software enabled the development of EUROPattern Suite solutions.

What is Machine Learning?

Machine learning works a bit like teaching by example. The system is shown many images during training, so it ‘learns’ to recognize certain features and patterns. Once trained, it can apply that knowledge to new images it has never seen before. To make sure the system is accurate, separate test images are used to verify its performance. It does this through convolutional neural networks (CNNs), where each layer adds more detail until a final result is reached. When many layers are combined, it becomes a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN), which is the foundation of deep learning and EUROIMMUN’s EUROPattern, classifier feature enabling faster and more precise pattern recognition during indirect immunofluorescence testing.

Indirect Immunofluorescence Testing: Manual Reading to Machine-Learning

Euroimmun’s EUROPattern is a computer-aided immunofluorescence microscopy (CAIFM) system that uses machine learning, specifically DCNN, to interpret immunofluorescence images (patterns). Immunofluorescence patterns are critical when examining patient samples with autoimmune or infectious disease conditions. The classifier accurately distinguishes between specific (positive) and unspecific (negative) patterns. When a specific pattern is detected, the classifier can further identify the exact pattern type. This functionality helps laboratories interpret results more reliably, accelerates pattern recognition, and supports faster diagnosis of diseases, ultimately increasing confidence in proceeding with confirmatory testing..   The EUROPattern can capture over 500 fields per run, with image acquisition completed in just 13 seconds. This efficiency accelerates workflows without compromising accuracy. The newest device, EUROPattern LIVE, features an integrated high-resolution camera and automated laser-focus technology, enabling exceptionally fast image acquisition in only two seconds per image. It can capture up to 50 reaction fields per session, further streamlining the process.

How Do Laboratories Benefit?

The EUROPattern microscope not only reduces variability but also enables high throughput, labor savings, and standardized operations (1). For laboratories, this translates into greater efficiency and consistency across testing workflows. For physicians, this means faster results for their patients and clear explanations of the findings, offering more reliable insights into clinical symptoms. Ultimately, EUROPattern microscope together with the classifier drives innovations that improve patient care, particularly in critical conditions such as lupus.

Over 4 Hours in Labor Savings

A study reported that for an average of 400 samples per day, 4:20 hours in labor was saved with EUROPattern Suite versus the lab’s previous methodology. Additionally, the EUROPattern system provided overall improvement with respect to the recognition of ANA patterns and the determination of endpoint titers. (1)

Summary

In summary, Euroimmun’ s EUROPattern and its advanced classifier are transforming laboratory workflows by enhancing accuracy, speed, and efficiency. By enabling rapid and reliable interpretation of immunofluorescence patterns, the system not only streamlines laboratory operations but also supports physicians in making quicker, more informed decisions. This technology accelerates the diagnostic process, providing critical insights into autoimmune and infectious diseases and ultimately improving patient care. With its ability to reduce variability and standardize results, EUROPattern is a powerful tool that empowers both laboratories and healthcare professionals to deliver better outcomes for patients.
